Celebrating Superman Day 2025
Word Balloons #1264: Celebrate 87 years of Superman with a visit to your local comic shop
It’s a celebration of the Man of Steel.
In honor of the release of “Action Comics” #1 in 1938, DC Comics marks April 18 as the release date of the original “Superman” story. Superman, rocketed from the planet Krypton as a baby, arrives on Earth and develops powers beyond those of mortal men. Disguised as mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent, he works at the Daily Planet alongside Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen and Perry White, where he uses his reporting instincts to uncover problems that need a Superman-sized solution.
DC has provided participating comic-book stores with some freebies and limited items to celebrate the Man of Tomorrow, including:
All Star Superman #1 Special Edition by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely
Superman For All Seasons Book One Special Edition by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale
An excerpt of the upcoming young adult graphic novel Jimmy Olsen’s Supercyclopedia by Gabe Soria and Sandy Jarrell
Action Comics #1 Golden Age–Size Facsimile Edition featuring an homage cover by superstar artist Dan Mora.

Dean Compton of the Unspoken Decade joined me to share some underrated Superman comics in this column:
Underrated Superman comic books
The Man of Steel is generally considered the first comic-book superhero and one of the best, but some of his tales may be underrated or undervalued.
Oklahoma filmmakers Nick Sanford and Adam Hampton discuss the seminal 1978 “Superman: The Movie” on Sanford’s podcast here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2221521/episodes/15348874
(Probably has some adult language, along with some great insights.)
Overall, Superman has been a favorite of mine from a very young age, and is a character who shows that power is ultimately meaningless without compassion and kindness. Our connections to each other make us stronger, and our ability to be a friend to a friend in need is when we truly show strength.
Enjoy a Superman comic, film or TV show today if you can, and visit your local comic shop to check out some neat Superman stories.
