Comic creators heading for Tulsa show
Midweek update: RetroMania Collectibles show set for Tulsa
Tulsa-based comic book writer, critic, and novelist R.A. Jones is set to appear at the RetroMania Collectibles show in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this weekend.
The show, scheduled for Nov. 18 and 19, will be held at the Exchange Center at Expo Square, 4145 E. 21st St. in Tulsa.
Jones, formerly a comics critic for “Amazing Heroes,” wrote a wide variety of comics for Malibu, including “Scimidar,” “Dark Wolf,” “Merlin,” “Ferret,” “The Protectors,” and “StarTrek: Deep Space 9.”
He’s written for DC, Dark Horse, Image and Marvel Comics. “X-Men” fans who want insight into the characters can get an insider’s view from Jones: With credits on the titles "Weapon X" and "Wolverine/Captain America," Jones has added his own tales to Marvel's mutants over the years. But before those assignments, Jones wrote about the X-Men, including an extensive history of the team for the now-defunct magazine Amazing Heroes.’
In recent years, Jones has returned in novel form to some characters he first explored in comics.
Jones has written a series of World War II-era novels starring the old Centaur comic-book heroes. The novels in the series are "Steel Ring," "Twilight War" and “House of Souls.” Jones also wrote versions of these characters in the 1990s comic-book series "The Protectors."
In 2017, Jones also wrote a novel starring his comic-book character Scimidar. The interior illustrations are by Rob Davis, who drew most of the original Scimidar comic books.
Jones and Davis have recently re-teamed on the title “Twilight Grimm” from Silverline Comics, featuring a vampire hunter who has sworn to protect humans.
Also appearing at the convention are several Colonial Marines from the “Aliens” film, plus comics creators Michael Golden, Renée Witterstaetter, and Arthur Sudyam.
Golden co-created the character Rogue from the X-Men.
The 1981 “Avengers Annual” No. 10 featured the character's first appearance in an issue written by longtime “X-Men” writer Chris Claremont. In 1983, Golden worked on an annual edition for the “X-Men” as well.
Golden worked on other popular Marvel properties in the 1980s, including “The 'Nam,” “Micronauts,” “G.I. Joe” and “Doctor Strange.”
