'Disfluency' set for OKC screenings
Film features story of former top student dealing with aftermath of trauma
Writer/director Anna Baumgarten brings her film Disfluency to OKC’s Rodeo Cinema this weekend.
In the film, Jane returns to her parents’ lake home in Michigan after failing her final college class. Here, she comes to terms with the trauma that derailed her senior year.
A review from Richard Propes at the Independent Critic states: “Disfluency is one of the most effective films I've seen on the subject of trauma precisely because Baumgarten refuses to re-traumatize for the sake of effective drama.”
This is Baumgarten’s first feature as a director; she was named one of Austin Film Festival’s “Screenwriters to Watch” in 2024.
Check out the synopsis of the film below:
To everyone’s surprise, “Jane the Brain” flunks her final college class and retreats to her Michigan hometown by the lake. Her parents, sister, townie friends, and an old high school crush soften the burden of failure, and it’s not long before this misstep feels more like an opportunity at one last carefree summer vacation. She rekindles a friendship with her neighbor, Amber, a single mother with a difficult toddler, and utilizes her skills as a linguistics student – including American Sign Language – to help Amber connect with her son. Despite her best efforts, however, Jane can’t keep the real reason that caused her academic disruption bottled up. She struggles with impostor syndrome, and her PTSD boils over. With the support of those around her, Jane unravels herself and starts the never-ending process of healing.
