On Friday, The Oklahoma Film Critics Circle (OFCC) announced its 19th annual slate of award winners.
“Conclave” was named Best Film of 2024 by the group of Oklahoma critics.
(I’ve been a member of the group since its inception in meetings beginning around 2005. The first awards were given in 2006.)
“While the OFCC joined many awards groups in recognizing Anora and The Brutalist as among the year’s best, by honoring Conclave in five major categories, the OFCC made a clear statement that there’s much more to Conclave – both artistically and thematically – than its controversial final twist,” said Jeff Huston, OFCC president, in a news release.
The OFCC added three new categories in 2024: Best Stunt Coordination, Best Performance by an Animal Actor and Best Indigenous Film.
“The addition of Best Indigenous Film is of particular value to the OFCC membership, as we consider it both an honor and responsibility to recognize the growing contribution of ancestral filmmakers to our collective cinematic journey, whether they be Native Americans or natives of any nation or continent,” said Huston in the news release. “This year, the searing real-life tragedy Sugarcane was the first to receive that award, and the runner-up in our Indigenous category, Fancy Dance, won the Best First Feature prize for director Erica Tremblay.”
