SkasdiCon set for Nov. 4
Midweek update: SkasdiCon is an Indigenous comic convention in Tahlequah, Oklahoma
Actors from “Reservation Dogs” and Cherokee artist Roy Boney Jr. are among the guests set for SkasdiCon, a one-day event featuring Native pop culture panels, screenings, Indigenous artists, and family-friendly cosplay.
The event is scheduled for noon-7 p.m., Nov. 4, 2023, at the Northeastern State University’s University Center Ballroom, 612 N. Grand Ave. in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
According to SkasdiCon.com:
“While there’s no equivalent to “Skasdi” in the English language, it’s used to represent terms like pride, impressiveness, awesomeness, fierceness or feistiness and more.
These vibrant words are the kind of attributes that are used to describe many comic book, movie and video game characters, created by artists and celebrated by cosplayers, that make up comic conventions. From this, SkasdiCon was born!”
This year marks the second SkasdiCon, a partnership between Northeastern State University and the Cherokee Nation.
“Reservation Dogs” actors Kaniehtiio Horn and Jana Schmieding are scheduled guests, as is “1883” producer Jhane Myers.
Cherokee artist Roy Boney Jr. is scheduled for the show as well. Boney has drawn covers for Marvel Comics, and has created two new covers, for “Ghost Rider” #20 and “Sensational She-Hulk” #2, that will go on sale in November and feature stories tied to Native American Heritage Month.
Admission to SkasdiCon is $5. Children 12 and under, as well as middle school through college students with a student ID, get in free. Those who attend in costume will also be admitted for free.
