Teen film tackles grief, mental health
Oklahoma-filmed ‘What Rhymes With Reason’ comes to theaters Oct. 10 for World Mental Health Day 2023
Congrats to those involved with the Oklahoma-filmed “What Rhymes With Reason,” coming to theaters for World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10.
Reckless Abandonment Pictures partnered with 988 Mental Health Lifeline and Fathom Events on the release of the film, which features a group of teens seeking a legendary landmark in the wilderness.
From the news release:
On this year’s World Mental Health Day, Fathom Events will release the teen drama What Rhymes With Reason for one night only to 700+ theaters nationwide. The October 10 showing begins at 7 PM local time and includes a special message from the filmmakers sharing their passion for stories that address the mental health challenges facing today’s youth.
The cast includes Gattlin Griffith (The Boys), Ricardo Hurtado (School of Rock), Giselle Torres (The Villains of Valley View), LaRonn Marzett, Katie Burgess, Juan Graterol and Bart Johnson (High School Musical).
The film is produced by Kim Dawson (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Jacob Snovel (Out of Exile), and Nathan Gardocki (Reagan).
Also worth mentioning, Oklahoma artist Jonathan Koelsch handled the poster duties.
Kyle Roberts is the director, someone I’ve known since my days at The Oklahoman and someone I’ve worked extensively with in the past. He’s wanted to tell this story for a long time. He teamed with writer Sean Thiessen, another fellow I’ve known and worked with several times, and the two of them took a long and winding journey to get this story to theaters, with a passion to help teens struggling with a variety of issues. While this all sounds heavy, Roberts and crew manage to keep the adventure moving briskly while dealing with serious issues. It’s also beautifully shot, showcasing many great Oklahoma locations. It’s likely to open the door for discussions that might otherwise not happen — possibly among the reasons a “Let My Love Open the Door” cover plays a key role in the film.
The film debuted at OKC’s deadCenter Film Festival in June to a packed house – now Roberts and crew get a chance to take the film nationwide.
