‘Terminator’ comics to return for 40th anniversary of film
Word Balloons #1226: Dynamite to publish new adventures in humanity’s battle with Skynet
Cyberpunk time-travel classic “The Terminator” will make a return to comic books in October.
In time for the 40th anniversary of the original “The Terminator” film, Dynamite will bring back the war between the humans and the machines in the pages of comic books.
The original 1984 film starred Arnold Schwartzenegger as a Terminator sent from the future to kill Sarah Connor, before she could give birth to John Connor, who would lead the resistance against the machines in the future.
Declan Shalvey will write the new series, with art by Luke Sparrow.
"The approach of this series is new situations, new dilemmas in each issue. Mostly done-in-one stories, but as the series progresses, there may be some recognizable faces…," said writer Declan Shalvey in a news release. "We’re going for a more stripped-down, pulpy approach to the book. As innovative and groundbreaking as the first film was, it was also grounded in its environment, being noirish and moody as hell. An unstoppable force is coming to kill you — that’s the element of the franchise I want to lean into."
Alex Ross (“Kingdom Come”) was part of the Terminator franchise early in his career, on the series “Burning Earth.” Dynamite will utilize Ross’ art in the form of variant “Icon Covers” on the new series.
In the new series, Skynet and the Terminators have found additional paths to the past to try to snuff out key figures in the resistance or their ancestors.
Dynamite recently raised more than $250,00 in funds for reprint collections of the Dark Horse Terminator comics through BackerKit – reprint editions are expected to be released through other channels in 2025.
“Terminator” #1 from Dynamite Comics will be solicited in the August Previews magazine from distributor Diamond Comics Distribution and is featured on the cover of the magazine.
