SoonerCon returns to Norman, OK, this weekend with the theme “Gateway to the Galaxy.”
SoonerCon 33 will be held June 20-22 at the Embassy Suites in Norman. The speculative fiction/pop culture convention draws thousands of fans to the city annually.
According to the SoonerCon website, the convention hosts celebrity guests, unique shopping opportunities, costume contests, an all-ages dance, the largest sci-fi and fantasy art show in the region, tabletop and video gaming, panels, workshops, kids programming and three days of fun for the whole family.
I’ll have more about SoonerCon in Friday’s column, but it’s always good to order tickets early if you can.
I’ll be appearing at the following SoonerCon panels this year. Info below includes time, location, panelists and panel description.
Reel Wars: The Greatest Decade of Movies

The '80s brought us unforgettable classics like The Empire Strikes Back, E.T., and Back to the Future, but was it truly the best decade for cinema? Or did the magic of storytelling, direction, and music peak before or after -- maybe in the gritty '70s, the groundbreaking '90s, or the bold 2000s and 2010s? This panel dives deep into the soul of cinema to explore what defines a great decade for movies. Was it the compelling storytelling of pre-'80s films? The character-driven dramas of the '90s? Or the artistic ambition of modern masterpieces? Let's settle the debate: When was the golden age of movies?
